D E S C R I P T I O NPortfolio: 23 prints as described, plus a title sheet; a colophon sheet describing the process, materials, and contributors; and a descriptive sheet which provides a summary of each day's story contributing to the content and look of each poster. The posters are housed in a sturdy clamshell box, designed, produced and covered in pastepaper specially made for the project by Lead Graffiti.
We would gather to watch each stage of the 2012 Tour de France each morning "live on TV," choose memorable incidents or moments, go to lunch to discuss options, and then head to the studio to translate those options into a poster using wood & metal type via letterpress. Including our scanning the previous day's poster, making various sized for our website, Facebook, etc., each poster is printed the same day, averaging just over 15 hours a day from start to finish. Each poster was generated rather spontaneously on the bed of our Vandercook Universal III, without sketches or preliminary plan except those generated while watching the stage. Some days we would print the first of what averaged about 5 runs a day without any idea of what the second run would be.
Many days we had guests in the studio, some who had paid to share the experience and others who were just invited, who helped develop the ideas and contributed to the production. Each print is signed by the print's contributors.
The image shows the portfolio with its clamshell from the 2011 edition which has been wrapped in Lead Graffiti pastepaper made specifically for the project
While prints last the portfolio is also available with a composite print overprinted with all of the print runs of the 21 stages and 2 rest days.
